Why We Shut Down Three Schools In Edo State – Govt
The Edo State Government has ordered the immediate closure of three schools in Akoko Edo Local Government Area over security concerns.
The affected schools are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo; Ososo Comprehensive High School, Ososo; and Makeke Secondary School, Makeke.
The government said the closure would remain in force until further notice.
In a statement to Naija News issued on Wednesday by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Dr Patrick Akhere Ebojele, the government said the decision was taken to safeguard students, teachers and school personnel.
The statement said all academic and non-academic activities in the affected schools had been suspended with immediate effect.
However, students currently sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will be allowed access to their examination centres under strict security arrangements.
According to the government, the security arrangements will be coordinated by school authorities, security agencies and community leaders.
The government directed principals of the affected schools to ensure the safe and orderly release of students to their parents and guardians.
They were also instructed to secure all school facilities, equipment and property throughout the closure period.
The principals were further directed to maintain regular communication with the Edo State Government, the Chief Inspector of Education and relevant security agencies.
The state government advised parents, guardians and residents of the affected communities to remain calm and vigilant.
It also urged them to cooperate with security agencies as efforts are intensified to maintain peace and ensure public safety.
The government assured the public that necessary measures were being taken to address the situation and restore normal academic activities as soon as conditions permit.
