We Want Nigerians Safe – Senate Vows Quick Action On State Police Amid Insecurity
The Senate has said it will speed up work on the constitutional changes needed to create state police as insecurity, bandit attacks and kidnappings continue to affect many parts of Nigeria.
Naija News reports that Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Yemi Adaramodu, disclosed this while speaking on the National Assembly’s plans to strengthen the country’s security system.
According to him, the Senate is ready to begin the constitutional procedures required for the establishment of state police and will give the process urgent attention.
He said lawmakers are determined to ensure that the legal framework needed for state policing is completed as quickly as possible in order to improve security and tackle criminal activities across the country.
The development comes at a time when many Nigerians are expressing concern over the rising cases of kidnapping, banditry and violent attacks in different states.
There have also been increasing calls for policing powers to be decentralized so that state governments can play a bigger role in addressing security challenges within their territories.
Adaramodu stated that lawmakers are prepared to hasten legislative action on the matter as part of efforts to support the Federal Government in dealing with the country’s security problems.
He said: “The Senate is fully prepared to commence the constitutional processes for the establishment of state police without delay.
“We will ensure that the necessary legislative action is given to the establishment of state police to keep Nigerians safe and secure and drive out bandits and other criminals. The legislature is also ready to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigerians in addressing the country’s security challenges.”
