Police Begin Crackdown On Tinted Vehicles

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has started enforcing the ban on vehicles with tinted windows as part of efforts to tackle crime in Abuja, especially activities linked to one-chance gangs.

Naija News reports that the development was announced on Friday in Abuja by the Commissioner of Police for the FCT, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi.

He said security findings showed that many vehicles used for criminal operations in the territory often have tinted windows, hidden number plates, or no proper registration.

According to him, such vehicles make it easier for criminals to hide their identities, avoid being detected, and make the work of security agencies more difficult.

He added that the trend has become a growing concern because it affects public safety across the capital city.

Sanusi explained that the decision followed intelligence reports indicating that criminal groups within the FCT frequently rely on these types of vehicles while carrying out unlawful activities.

He disclosed that the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, directed the command to begin a full enforcement operation against motorists violating regulations on tinted windows, covered number plates, and vehicle registration requirements.

The police commissioner stated that the operation is not aimed at motorists who have legally obtained approval to use tinted glass. Instead, the exercise is designed to prevent criminals from taking advantage of such vehicles to commit offences against residents of the FCT.

He further revealed that more than 30 vehicles have already been seized during the ongoing operation. The affected vehicles were found with tinted windows, concealed number plates, or without valid registration documents.

Sanusi said owners and operators of the impounded vehicles would face prosecution in line with existing federal laws and the provisions of the FCT Road Transport Regulations 2023.

He added that the command would continue the enforcement exercise to strengthen security and reduce criminal activities across the nation’s capital.
