Abia Govt Suspends State House Of Assembly Clerk

The Abia State Government has suspended the Clerk of the State House of Assembly, John Pedro Irokansi, over allegations of misconduct.

Naija News reports that the suspension was conveyed in a letter dated Friday May 29, 2026, and signed by the state Head of Service, Benson Ojeikere.

Following the decision, the government has appointed Promise Onwukwe, a Deputy Director in the Legislative Department of the Abia State House of Assembly, as the Acting Clerk with immediate effect.

Although the government did not reveal the details of the allegations against Irokansi, it stated that the appointment of the Acting Clerk would remain in place while more investigations into the matter continue.

The directive also instructed Onwukwe to take full responsibility for the administration of the Clerk’s office until the probe is concluded or further instructions are issued by the appropriate authorities.

He was also directed to ensure the protection of all government assets, official records and documents handed over to him in line with existing regulations.

Irokansi is a long-serving civil servant who has occupied the position of Clerk of the Abia State House of Assembly for about sixteen years.

During that period, he worked under three different government administrations in the state.
