Tinubu To Deliver Presidential Broadcast, Address NASS On June 12
President Bola Tinubu will address a joint session of the National Assembly (NASS) on June 12 as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary.
Naija News reports that the President is also expected to deliver a nationwide broadcast to commemorate the day.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, announced this on Tuesday in Abuja.
The disclosure was contained in a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the SGF, Yomi Odunuga.
Akume made the announcement while inaugurating an inter-ministerial committee to coordinate preparations for the June 12 celebration at the Shehu Shagari Complex in Abuja.
He said committee members must begin work immediately, with only 10 days left before the anniversary.
According to the SGF, activities for the commemoration will begin with a World Press Conference on June 4.
Special Juma’at prayers will be held on June 5, while a special inter-denominational church service is scheduled for June 7.
A Democracy Day public lecture will take place on June 9, followed by youth and women-oriented programmes on June 10.
The events will climax on June 12 with the President’s address to the National Assembly, a presidential broadcast and a Democracy Day Gala Night.
Akume said the government was mindful of the current national mood and the administration’s commitment to fiscal responsibility.
He said this year’s activities would therefore be modest in scale.
The SGF also paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993, democratic struggle, especially the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.
He said Abiola’s sacrifice remained the foundation on which Nigeria’s current democratic institutions were built.
Akume said the annual commemoration was a fitting way to honour those who fought for democracy and celebrate the country’s democratic progress.
He added that the occasion would allow the Tinubu administration to show Nigerians the progress recorded in consolidating democracy, strengthening institutions and repositioning the country through reforms.
The inter-ministerial committee is chaired by Akume.
Its members include ministers of information, interior, FCT, health, foreign affairs, finance, defence, and budget and economic planning.
Others include the National Security Adviser, Inspector-General of Police, Director-General of the Department of State Services, presidential aides and permanent secretaries.
The committee is expected to plan, organise and execute all approved Democracy Day activities, document them for posterity and co-opt relevant organisations or individuals where necessary.
Akume directed all subcommittee secretaries to submit their budgets promptly to ensure the smooth implementation of the programmes.
