WAEC Speaks On Viral Letter Claiming Police Will Be Deployed At Exam Centres
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed a letter circulating online which claimed that security personnel would be stationed at examination centres for the ongoing 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.
In a statement released by the council’s spokesperson, Moyosola Adesina, WAEC said the document was not issued by the examination body and described it as a false publication created by individuals seeking to mislead the public and create confusion during the examination period.
Naija News reports that the council noted the letter did not originate from the office of the Senior Deputy Registrar in charge of Test Administration or any department within WAEC Nigeria.
The examination body stated that it had not released any directive ordering the deployment of security officers to individual examination centres across the country.
WAEC explained that the fake document, dated May 27, 2026, was allegedly addressed to school owners and principals nationwide.
The letter falsely claimed that arrangements had been completed for officers of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to be posted to all examination centres from June 1.
The council said the forged document also carried a fake signature in the name of the Senior Deputy Registrar and Head of Test Administration, S.D. Kum, in an attempt to make it appear genuine.
WAEC accused those behind the letter of trying to deceive school administrators, parents and candidates while causing unnecessary concern over the conduct of the ongoing examinations.
The examination body urged school authorities, supervisors, invigilators, parents and members of the public to ignore the contents of the letter, insisting that it was completely false and should not be treated as an official communication from the council.
WAEC further advised stakeholders to rely only on information released through its recognised communication channels and official announcements regarding the conduct of the 2026 WASSCE.
“The Management of the West African Examinations Council wishes to state categorically that the said letter is fake, as it did not emanate from the office of the Senior Deputy Registrar (Test Administration) or any other department within WAEC Nigeria,” the council said.
