1. FG Declares May 27, 28 Public Holidays For Eid-el-Kabir

The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

Naija News reports that the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the holidays in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani, on Monday in Abuja.

The government said the declaration reflected its respect for the faith and spiritual heritage of millions of Nigerian Muslims joining the global Islamic community to observe the sacred occasion.

Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslim faithful in Nigeria and the diaspora on the celebration.

He described Eid-el-Kabir as a festival of deep spiritual significance rooted in sacrifice, obedience to God and compassion for others.

The Federal Government urged Nigerians to use the period for prayer and sober reflection.

2. INEC Appeals Court Ruling On Submission Of Membership Register

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has appealed the judgment of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which nullified part of the election guidelines the commission put in place for the conduct of the 2027 general election.

INEC asked the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal to set aside the High Court ruling that changed the deadline for political parties to submit membership registers ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Naija News recalls that Justice Muhammed Umar of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, had last week, nullified guidelines issued by INEC directing political parties to submit their membership registers and databases by May 10, 2026, as a condition for participation in the 2027 general election.

The Court order followed a suit by the Youth Party challenging the legality of the electoral body’s directive or guidelines.

But, in a notice of appeal dated May 25, 2026, filed by INEC, through its Counsel, Alex Izinyon (SAN), the electoral umpire prayed the court to set aside the judgment of the lower court.

Apart from praying the court to set aside the judgment, the Senior Lawyer, in the appeal, asked the court to stay the execution of the judgment.

3. ‘Agreement Was Reached’ – Wike Breaks Silence On Fubara’s Withdrawal From Second-term Ambition

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister, Nyesom Wike, has asserted that Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, breached the impeachment agreement following his decision to seek a second term in office.

Naija News reports that Wike made this known on Monday, during the inspection of a string of near-completed road and infrastructure projects across the FCT, including the Renewed Hope City in Kassara, the Old Kedfi Road in Dei Dei, the Airport Road to Kuje corridor handled by Arab Contractors, the Kuje to Gwagwalada first phase by Gilmour, and the City Gate project being executed by Julius Berger.

Speaking on Fubara’s withdrawal from the 2027 All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship race and throwing his full weight behind the emergence of House of Representatives member, Kingsley Chinda, as the party’s candidate, Wike said the Governor should not have purchased the nomination forms.

According to Wike, Fubara‘s move was a breach of political trust and an affront to President Bola Tinubu’s repeated peace interventions.

4. Why President Tinubu Must Continue To Borrow – Umahi

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has justified the borrowings by President Bola Tinubu, saying it’s for the country’s development.

According to Umahi, Tinubu is borrowing to fix Nigeria’s roads because infrastructure is the foundation for security, commerce and economic growth.

Naija News reports that the Minister made the submission on Monday during a visit by the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to the Ministry of Works in Abuja.

He said that without borrowing, various developmental works will be hindered.

He urged Nigerians to support the president’s reforms, saying those pushing to take over from Tinubu in 2027 can not do better than him.

5. Nigeria’s GDP Grows By 3.89%

Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 3.89% (year-on-year) in real terms in the first quarter of 2026, higher than the 3.13% recorded in the first quarter of 2025.

Naija News reports that this was disclosed in a report on Monday by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

According to the data released, agriculture grew by 3.15% during the quarter under review, an improvement from the 0.07% recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2025.

The growth of the industry sector stood at 3.50% from 3.42% recorded in the first quarter of 2025, while the services sector recorded a growth of 4.31% from 4.33% in the same quarter of 2025.

In terms of share of the GDP, the services sector contributed more to the aggregate GDP in the first quarter of 2026 at 57.73% compared to the corresponding quarter of 2025 at 57.50%.

In the quarter under review, aggregate GDP at basic price stood at ₦110,786,347.01 million in nominal terms.

6. Details Of PDP Meeting With Governor Makinde Emerges

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), paid a condolence visit to the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, on Monday.

Discussions during the visit centred around the recent incidents of insecurity in the state in which some school students and teachers were kidnapped by bandits, Naija News reports.

According to information made available by the PDP after the meeting, Turaki conveyed the condolences of the party’s leadership and members to the government and people of Oyo State.

He commended the steps taken so far by the State Government, while urging the Federal Government to urgently review the security architecture at the sub-national level by granting more operational powers to Governors for the protection of lives and property.

In his response, Governor Makinde appreciated the leadership of the party for the visit.

He noted that the PDP has proven to be good friends in bad times.

Nigerian skitmaker, Emmanuel Ogonna Iwueke, popularly known as Craze Clown, has recounted a car accident that nearly claimed his life.

Naija News reports that Craze Clown recounted the near-death experience while responding to a conversation on the 𝕏 platform where users were asked to describe what almost killed them.

In response, the entertainer said the crash happened on October 26, 2020, which was also the birthday of his pregnant wife.

In the video shared by Craze Clown, the white BMW SUV involved in the accident was badly damaged after flipping over, with severe impact on all sides and parts of the wheels torn off.

Craze Clown stated he was in the passenger seat during the collision, but another occupant died instantly at the scene, noting that the incident turned what should have been a day of celebration into one of panic and emotional distress.

While expressing gratitude to God for sparing his life and acknowledging the loss suffered by the deceased’s family, the content creator said he still does not understand how he escaped alive.

England captain, Harry Kane has clinched the European Golden Boot for the second time after another ruthless season in front of goal for Bayern Munich.

Harry Kane finished the 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign with 36 goals in 31 league appearances under Vincent Kompany, earning 72 points to emerge as Europe’s leading scorer across domestic leagues.

Kane finished ahead of Erling Haaland, who scored 27 league goals for Manchester City, while Kylian Mbappe placed third after scoring 25 times for Real Madrid.

It is the second time Kane has claimed the award since joining Bayern, having also won it during his debut season in Germany in 2023/24 when he scored the same number of Bundesliga goals.

The 32-year-old enjoyed the most prolific campaign of his career, scoring 61 goals and registering seven assists in 51 appearances across all competitions for Bayern.

10. Injured Lamine Yamal In Spain World Cup Squad, No Real Madrid Players

Spain have named injured teenage star Lamine Yamal in their 26-man squad for the FIFA World Cup, despite concerns over the Barcelona forward’s fitness.

The 18-year-old has not played since suffering a torn left hamstring during Barcelona’s clash on 22 April, but Spain coach Luis de la Fuente remains confident the youngster will recover in time for the tournament.

“We’re very relaxed. Barring any setbacks, we’ll have everyone available from the very first match,” De la Fuente said after unveiling his squad.

Spain’s squad also includes Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, who has also been battling a hamstring issue in recent weeks.

In a major talking point, no Real Madrid player made the final squad for the first time in Spain’s history at the World Cup. Defenders Dean Huijsen and Dani Carvajal were both omitted.
