Atiku Wins ADC Presidential Primary In Gombe

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has won the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary election conducted across the 11 local government areas of Gombe State.

Naija News understands that Atiku polled 139,334 votes to defeat former Rivers State governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, and economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen in the exercise.

The result was announced on Monday evening by the state Returning Officer, Prof. David Agbu, who said the primary was conducted peacefully across the state.

According to the figures announced by Agbu, Amaechi came second with 1,150 votes, while Hayatu-Deen scored 465 votes.

The Returning Officer said 140,949 registered party members voted during the primary out of 160,982 registered ADC members in the state.

Declaring Atiku the winner, Agbu said, “From these results, Atiku scored the highest votes in the election and is hereby declared as the winner of the primary election in Gombe State, held today, May 25, 2026.”

The exercise formed part of the ADC’s nationwide presidential primary conducted to elect the party’s flag bearer for the 2027 presidential election.

Agbu thanked party members for their patience while the committee collated results from the 11 local government areas.

He said the door remained open for any aspirant dissatisfied with the outcome to file an appeal through the appropriate party channels.

The result was announced in the presence of officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, security personnel and party stakeholders.

Those present included a former Minister of Transportation, Senator Idris Abdullahi Umar, who is the party’s senatorial candidate for Gombe Central, as well as ADC senatorial candidates for Gombe South and Gombe North.

Party executives and other stakeholders were also present during the announcement.

The ADC in Gombe State had earlier announced Atiku as its sole candidate ahead of the presidential primary.

Atiku’s victory in the state came as the party continued its presidential primary process across the country.

The former Vice-President had earlier voted in the ADC presidential primary at Ajiya Ward Polling Unit in Jimeta, Yola, Adamawa State, where he described the exercise as “democracy at work.”

In Gombe, party members said the peaceful conduct of the exercise showed the level of mobilisation within the ADC as it prepares for the 2027 general election.
