American Basketball Star Brandon Clarke Dies At 29
American basketball club, Memphis Grizzlies, have confirmed the death of forward Brandon Clarke at the age of 29.
The NBA franchise announced the news on Tuesday, May 12, in a brief statement that did not reveal the cause of death.
“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke,” the club said. “Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten.”
His management company, Priority Sports, said in a statement that they were “beyond devastated” by Clarke’s death.
“He was the gentlest soul, who was the first to be there for all of his friends and family,” the agency said.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver also paid tribute, describing the forward as a respected presence within the league.
“We are devastated to learn of the passing of Brandon Clarke,” Silver said. “As one of the longest-tenured members of the Grizzlies, Brandon was a beloved teammate and leader who played the game with enormous passion and grit. Our thoughts and sympathies are with Brandon’s family, friends and the Grizzlies organization.”
Clarke spent his entire professional career in Memphis after being selected 21st overall in the 2019 NBA Draft. He made an immediate impact, earning All-Rookie honours in his debut season and quickly establishing himself as a key figure in the team’s rotation.
His performances earned him a four-year, 50-million-dollar contract extension in 2022, demonstrating the club’s long-term faith in his development and leadership.
Injuries, however, disrupted the latter part of his career. He played just six games during the 2023-2024 season before returning to feature in 64 games the following campaign. This season, he managed only two appearances due to persistent calf and knee problems.
His death comes six weeks after he was arrested in Arkansas on charges including possession of a controlled substance and fleeing in a vehicle while speeding.
