Spain Release Martin Zubimendi As Arsenal Injury Worries Deepen
Spain have released Martin Zubimendi from their squad after the Arsenal midfielder reported knee discomfort, compounding the club’s mounting injury concerns during the international break.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation, confirmed the decision on Sunday. “To avoid any risk whatsoever and safeguard the player’s health, he has been released from the squad,” the statement read. “Arsenal’s medical staff have been fully informed of the entire process.”
Zubimendi had appeared as a substitute in Spain’s 3-0 win over Serbia on Friday but will now miss Tuesday’s friendly against Egypt in Barcelona.
The 27-year-old has featured 44 times across all competitions this season for Premier League leaders Arsenal and has become central to their midfield balance in the Premier League title race.
His withdrawal adds to a growing injury list for manager Mikel Arteta, with nine other first-team players pulling out of international duty. Those sidelined include Eberechi Eze, Gabriel Magalhaes, Leandro Trossard, William Saliba, Jurrien Timber, Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Noni Madueke and Piero Hincapie.
Spain opted to release Zubimendi immediately so he can begin rehabilitation in London. Arsenal’s medical staff are expected to assess him on arrival at London Colney, with the club hoping the issue proves minor ahead of the league’s resumption.
