Kayode Egbetokun Allegedly Eyes Ogun West Senate Seat After Exit As IGP

The former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, despite his recent exit from office, is reportedly considering a political move to contest for the Ogun West Senatorial District seat.

Sources who spoke with Sahara Reporters disclosed that Egbetokun has remained at the official IGP residence while consulting on securing a senatorial ticket for his constituency in Ogun State.

A senior police source said the former police chief was strategising for a return to public office through elective politics.

“Egbetokun has stayed at the police IG house and is plotting to be allowed to be the senatorial candidate for his Ogun State Senatorial District,” the source said.

According to publicly available information, Egbetokun hails from Erinja in Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, which falls within the Ogun West Senatorial District.

President Bola Tinubu had, on February 24, reportedly directed Egbetokun to resign from office as Inspector-General of Police.

He was subsequently replaced by Tunji Disu, who previously headed the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Alagbon, Lagos.

Egbetokun’s tenure as IGP was dogged by controversy, particularly over the extension of his stay in office beyond the mandatory retirement age of 60 years or 35 years of service.

Civil society groups and critics had argued that the extension contravened established police regulations.
