Tragedy struck on Tuesday along the Kwara axis of the Ilorin-Ogbomoso highway as six persons, including a pregnant woman and five final-year nursing students, lost their lives in a fatal auto crash.

Naija News reports that the accident, which occurred in the Ote area of Kwara State, left families and colleagues of the victims in mourning, particularly as the students were said to be on their way to write their second semester examinations.

Reports had it that several of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, while others succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash at an undisclosed hospital where they were rushed for emergency treatment.

Although details of the vehicles involved and the immediate cause of the crash were still sketchy as of press time, the impact was said to have caused severe traffic disruption along the busy highway.

It was gathered that the deceased students were 500-level undergraduates enrolled in an Open and Distance Learning Bachelor of Nursing Science programme at a higher institution in Oyo State.

They were reportedly travelling to sit for their second semester examinations when the tragic incident occurred.

The loss has thrown their academic community into grief, as colleagues described the development as “heartbreaking and painful,” noting that the students were at the final stage of completing their programme.

Confirming the accident, the Kwara State Commandant of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Rosemary Alo, said the crash occurred at the Kwara end of the Ilorin-Ogbomoso road, specifically in the Ote area.

“Our personnel are working in collaboration with the Kwara State Command to restore normal traffic flow on the highway,” she said.

She, however, did not immediately disclose the number of vehicles involved or the suspected cause of the accident.
