FG Rejects US Congressmen Report On Christian Genocide
The Federal Government of Nigeria has rejected claims by some US Congressmen that Christians are being persecuted in the country.
Naija News reports that the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, said Nigeria has no policy targeting any religious group and described the allegations as misleading.
The US report, presented to President Donald Trump on Monday, was prepared by members of the House Committees on Appropriations and Foreign Affairs after months of investigations and field visits.
It examined reports of Christian persecution and broader extremist violence in Nigeria.
This report followed Trump’s decision to label Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern, prompting a congressional probe led by Congressman Riley Moore and Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole into alleged religious persecution and related violence.
In response, Mohammed Idris stated that Nigeria recognizes the country faces serious security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, and communal clashes, which have caused loss of lives and property across many communities.
He stressed that these acts are crimes driven by insecurity and not by government policy or religious bias.
The Minister also highlighted that the Nigerian Constitution guarantees freedom of religion and worship for all citizens. He assured that the government is committed to protecting these rights and providing equal protection under the law.
He added that Nigeria values its strategic partnership with the United States and is willing to continue dialogue and cooperation, while insisting that foreign partners must respect Nigeria’s constitutional framework and sovereignty.
The government affirmed it will keep engaging international partners through diplomatic channels while prioritizing the safety of all Nigerians.
