Macron Praises US Supreme Court Tariff Ruling, Says It Shows Value Of Checks And Balances
French President Emmanuel Macron praised the United States Supreme Court’s decision to strike down President Donald Trump’s tariffs, saying the ruling demonstrates why democracies need institutions that can check executive power.
Macron made the comments Saturday at the annual agricultural salon in Paris when reporters asked about Friday’s Supreme Court ruling that declared Trump’s tariffs illegal.
Naija News had earlier reported that the US Supreme Court struck down Trump’s tariffs in a 6 to 3 decision, ruling he lacked authority to use emergency powers to impose the taxes on imports.
“It is not bad to have a Supreme Court and, therefore, the rule of law. It is good to have power and counterweights to power in democracies,” Macron said.
The French president added that France would examine the consequences of Trump’s new 10 per cent global tariff and adjust accordingly. He said France wants to continue exporting its products, including agricultural goods, luxury items, fashion and aeronautical equipment.
Trump announced new 10% tariffs on all countries on Friday, hours after the Supreme Court struck down his previous tariffs.
Meanwhile, Macron also called for a calm approach to trade disputes, but acknowledged that other countries will not be quiet about unfair tariffs, saying the fairest rule is “reciprocity” rather than being “subjected to unilateral decisions.”
