UNILAG Food Vendor Dies In Electrocution Accident
A food vendor lost his life on Sunday morning at the College of Medicine, Idi-Araba campus of the University of Lagos after being electrocuted.
Naija News reports that the victim, identified as Lekan, was reportedly at a water point on the southern side of the campus when the incident occurred.
According to eyewitnesses, Lekan had gone to dispose of trash before stopping to wash his hands.
While attempting to turn off a tap, he came into contact with a nearby metal railing, which led to his electrocution.
A student who spoke to Punch on condition of anonimity said the vendor was alone at the time, and a security officer noticed something was wrong and raised an alarm, drawing attention to the area.
Efforts were made by nearby students to revive him before he was taken to the campus Accident and Emergency unit.
Lekan, however, was later pronounced dead at the medical facility.
The incident happened at about 10 a.m.
The Lagos State Police Command was informed and visited both the scene and the medical facility.
Engineers also inspected the site to determine the cause of the electrocution.
Preliminary observations indicated that the railing had not previously posed a danger, as the area is regularly used by students and staff without incidents.
In an official statement, the University of Lagos management expressed deep sorrow over Lekan’s death, extending condolences to his family, friends, and associates.
