Kaduna Assembly Reaffirms Probe Of El-Rufai As Protesters Demand Update
The Kaduna State House of Assembly on Monday reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability as hundreds of citizens stormed the complex to protest the ongoing probe of the administration of former governor, Nasir El-Rufai.
The protesters, led by Ambassador Yerima Shettima of the Northern Stakeholders Consultative Initiative and Aliyu Muhammad of the Coalition of Kaduna Stakeholders Forum, submitted a formal letter to the Speaker, Hon. Yusuf Dahiru Liman, demanding updates on the legislative investigation.
Addressing the demonstrators after receiving their petition, Speaker Liman disclosed that the Assembly had already taken concrete steps on the matter.
He revealed that a committee constituted in June 2024 to investigate the alleged misappropriation of N432bn had concluded its assignment and submitted its report to the appropriate authorities.
According to him, the House would not be deterred from carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.
“There are those who may not fully understand the role of the legislature, but we stand by our documented findings. Anybody found wanting will face the full wrath of the law,” Liman said.
He stressed that peaceful protest is a constitutional right, adding that no individual is above the law.
In his remarks, Shettima described the protest as a civic engagement aimed at strengthening democratic institutions in the state.
“This matter concerns the future of Kaduna State and the integrity of our democratic system. Citizens have the right to demand transparency and accountability,” he said.
The coalition urged the Assembly to provide clear updates on the status of the probe and consider establishing an open platform where affected citizens could present their concerns.
