Fears Of Internal Mutiny As Explosion Hits Niger Air Base

A mysterious overnight attack rocked Air Base 101 in Niamey, Niger’s capital, triggering fears of internal mutiny within the military and raising fresh concerns about stability under the junta led by Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani.

Security sources told Zagazola Makama that multiple explosions were heard around 12:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the strategic air base located close to Diori Hamani International Airport.

According to the sources, the attack damaged or disabled several military aerial assets, including drones and fixed-wing aircraft, and severely affected the Unified Force Command Centre within the base.

Four civilian aircraft parked on the tarmac were also reportedly affected, including one belonging to ASKY Airlines, though no passengers were onboard at the time of the incident.

The sources further disclosed that two trucks transporting uranium materials within the base perimeter were hit during the attack. However, the cargo was said to have remained intact, preventing what could have been a major environmental and security crisis.

There were confirmed casualties, as ambulances were seen moving in and out of the base throughout the night. Some of the attackers were reportedly killed during the operation, while others were arrested and taken into custody by Niger’s intelligence services.

The identity of those behind the attack remains unclear.

Although initial speculation pointed to possible jihadist involvement, no armed group has claimed responsibility for the assault.

Other security sources said the nature of the operation suggested it may have been launched from within the air base, raising suspicions of an internal mutiny rather than an external terrorist strike.

“The pattern of the attack and access to sensitive areas strongly indicate insider involvement,” a regional security analyst said.

The incident has heightened fears that Gen. Tchiani may be losing control over key institutions, particularly the military, with potentially serious implications for Niger’s internal stability.

Niger plays a critical role in regional security in the Sahel, and analysts warn that any breakdown in military command and control could worsen insecurity in neighbouring countries, including Nigeria, which already faces terrorism and banditry challenges.

As of the time of filing this report, Niger’s authorities had not issued an official statement on the incident.
