Coach Hails Troost-Ekong’s Lasting Impact As Former Super Eagles Captain Leaves Al-Kholood
Al-Kholood head coach, Des Buckingham, has paid glowing tribute to William Troost-Ekong, describing the former Super Eagles captain as an irreplaceable presence following his departure from the Saudi Pro League side.
Troost-Ekong, who joined Al-Kholood from Greek outfit PAOK in the summer of 2024, completed a move to Qatari club Al Ahli SC during the January transfer window, bringing an end to a brief but influential spell at the club.
Speaking at a press conference, Buckingham made it clear that while Al-Kholood will recruit to fill the vacancy in the squad, replacing Troost-Ekong’s overall influence is another matter entirely.
“You can’t replace William, and I don’t want to replace him as a player or as a person,” Buckingham told reporters.
“There will be someone who comes in to take his place as a player.”
The Al-Kholood manager went further, hailing the Nigerian defender as the finest captain he has worked with during his time at the club. According to Buckingham, Troost-Ekong’s leadership extended far beyond matchdays, shaping both the dressing room culture and the wider environment around the team.
“What I mean is, William is definitely the best leader I’ve ever worked with at this football club,” he said.
Buckingham also credited the former Udinese and Watford defender with helping him settle quickly after arriving at Al-Kholood, noting that Troost-Ekong played a key role in establishing standards within the squad.
“He has been a really important part of helping me get settled at the club and also making sure the things I just talked about with the culture and the environment are taken care of,” he added.
As Al-Kholood look ahead without one of their most influential figures, Buckingham stressed that Troost-Ekong’s contribution will be felt long after his exit.
“He has helped guide and support the players throughout that journey. I don’t think we can replace William,” he said.
Troost-Ekong leaves Al-Kholood having enjoyed a positive stint, playing a vital role in the club’s successful fight to retain their Saudi Pro League status.
