Samuel Eto’o Names Potential Winner Of 2026 African Footballer Of The Year
Former Cameroon great Samuel Eto’o has thrown his weight behind Senegal star Sadio Mane for this year’s African Footballer of the Year award.
Mane, who previously won the award in 2021, was central again as Senegal won their second AFCON crown, after beating Morocco 1-0 in the final. The forward, now with Al Nassr, combined sharp attacking play with leadership that caught the eye of Eto’o.
Speaking to FRANCE24, Eto’o highlighted Mane’s presence beyond the goals and assists, particularly during the dramatic late stages of the final when a penalty was awarded to Morocco.
“I’m honoured to call him a friend, and his role in leading his team to victory was exceptional,” Eto’o said. “I hope he wins the African Footballer of the Year again because what he did, especially his actions yesterday, show the qualities of a true leader.”
Those actions came after a controversial decision by referee Jean-Jacques Ndala to award a penalty following a challenge on Brahim Diaz. As tempers flared and Senegal players briefly headed for the tunnel, Mane stepped in to calm the situation and usher his teammates back onto the pitch.
Former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh believes that moment summed up why the Senegalese forward commands such respect across the game. Speaking on CAF TV, Oliseh said Mane’s popularity goes beyond talent.
“This is why Sadio Mane is loved worldwide, because of his intelligence and the ability to stay calm,” Oliseh said. “This is a man who has been through a lot of challenges in his playing career. I think Mane is a hero; he is an example that people should imitate. His teammates are coming back onto the pitch.”
