Price Of Refilling Cooking Gas Per Kg In Nigeria

As of January 2026, the retail price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, stands at ₦1,080 per kilogram in Nigeria.

Naija News understands that despite ongoing challenges in the energy sector, supply constraints, and foreign exchange fluctuations, the price of cooking gas has fallen sharply over the past few weeks.

Here’s a breakdown of the cost for various cylinder sizes based on the ₦1,080/kg rate:

1kg – ₦1,080

3kg – ₦3,240

5kg – ₦5,400

10kg – ₦10,800

12kg – ₦12,960

12.5kg – ₦13,500

Key Factors Influencing Cooking Gas Prices In Nigeria

Exchange Rate Volatility

Nigeria relies heavily on gas imports due to inadequate local refining capacity. The depreciation of the naira increases the cost of imported LPG.

Global Crude Oil Prices

LPG prices are closely linked to international crude oil prices. A rise in global oil prices typically leads to higher domestic LPG costs.

Inadequate Infrastructure

Limited storage facilities, inefficient distribution networks, and high transportation costs across states further push up retail prices.

Import Dependency

Despite Nigeria’s vast gas reserves, much of the LPG consumed is imported. Import levies, port charges, and delays add to the final price paid by consumers.

Regulatory Policies & Taxes

Policy inconsistencies and taxation on LPG-related equipment and services impact pricing. Subsidy removal and market deregulation have also played a role in price hikes.

Demand Surge

More households are switching to LPG due to its cleaner-burning properties compared to charcoal or kerosene, increasing demand and putting pressure on supply.
