Seven Killed In Terrorist Attack On Ƙyara Town, Sokoto
At least seven people have been confirmed dead following a deadly attack by suspected terrorists on Ƙyara town, located in the Birnin Gobir Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
According to reports gathered by SaharaReporters, the attack occurred on Wednesday night, when over 100 assailants launched a coordinated assault on the town, blocking all major entry and exit routes before storming the community.
The assailants reportedly surrounded the town from all sides, blocking off any escape routes before proceeding with the violent attack, which lasted for several hours.
“The gunmen moved freely within the town for several hours, creating panic and chaos,” said a local source.
At least seven people were killed in the assault, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The deceased were buried on Thursday in accordance with Islamic rites, as families and community members mourned the tragic loss.
Several injured residents are receiving treatment in hospitals, with some reported to be in critical condition. The attack has left the community in a state of heightened fear and anxiety.
Residents revealed that the attack came just a day after the same group of suspected bandits allegedly abducted 38 people (excluding children) from Lajinge district, which is also part of the Birnin Gobir axis. The victims have reportedly been taken to unknown locations, further escalating the tension in the region.
Community members expressed deep frustration and disappointment over the absence of Nigerian security forces during and after the attack. According to local sources, despite multiple distress calls, no immediate response came from security agencies in the state during the assault.
“We made several calls for help, but no one came to our aid. It was security forces from the neighbouring Niger Republic who arrived after the attackers had withdrawn,” said a resident.
The Nigerien security operatives reportedly pursued the attackers across the border, highlighting the cross-border dimension of the insecurity affecting the region.
Birnin Gobir and other parts of eastern Sokoto have experienced repeated attacks by armed groups in recent months, with locals lamenting the rising frequency of killings, abductions, and destruction of property.
As of the time of filing this report, Sokoto State authorities and security agencies had yet to issue an official statement on the attack.
