Xabi Alonso Leaves Real Madrid After Seven Months Reign

Real Madrid have confirmed that Xabi Alonso has stepped down as head coach, bringing an abrupt end to seven months in charge of the Spanish giants.

The club announced on Sunday that the decision was reached by mutual agreement, with Alonso departing his role with immediate effect.

In an official statement, Real Madrid said:
“Real Madrid C. F. announces that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to bring his time as head coach of the first team to an end.

“Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Madridistas because he is a legend of Real Madrid and has consistently represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home.

“Our club would like to thank Xabi Alonso and his entire coaching staff for their hard work and dedication throughout this period, and wishes them the very best of luck in this new chapter of their lives.”

Alonso’s exit follows disappointment in the 2026 Super Copa, where Real Madrid were beaten by arch-rivals FC Barcelona. The defeat proved decisive, with the former midfielder leaving his post less than a day after the loss.

The 42-year-old, a former fan favourite at the Santiago Bernabéu, had been appointed amid high expectations. His brief tenure drew intense scrutiny as Madrid sought to maintain domestic dominance but could not stop Barcelona from outshining the Spanish giants.
