Top Nigerian Newspaper Headlines For Today, Sunday, 10th January, 2026
Good morning Nigeria. Welcome to the Naija News roundup of top newspaper headlines in Nigeria for today, Sunday, 10th January, 2026.
1. ‘Impeachment Plot Is Retaliation Against Fubara For Rejecting Fictitious Projects In 2026 Budget’ – APC
The All Progressives Congress (APC) South-South Group has claimed that the Rivers State House of Assembly lawmakers loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, deliberately issued impeachment threats against Governor Siminalayi Fubara for refusing to approve fictitious projects in the state’s 2026 budget proposal.
Naija News reports that the group made the allegation on Friday in Port Harcourt while responding to claims by Rivers lawmakers that Fubara breached the peace agreement brokered by President Bola Tinubu to end the protracted political crisis in the state.
Speaking with journalists, coordinator of the APC South-South Group, Freedom Amadi, said the impeachment move was not rooted in any violation of the peace accord but was a calculated retaliation against the governor for resisting pressure to inflate the budget with questionable line items.
The APC South-South rejected the claim that Fubara acted in bad faith and undermined the Tinubu-brokered deal, arguing that such statements constituted open defiance of presidential authority and threatened democratic stability.
According to the group, the peace deal was intended to restore stability and allow governance to proceed without coercion, not to subject the governor to legislative oversight.
The APC South-South also asserted that lawmakers driving the impeachment process against Fubara were acting in alignment with Wike, the former Governor of Rivers State.
The group noted that Wike’s continued silence, despite serving in an APC-led federal government, raised serious questions about loyalty to the President who appointed him.
The APC South-South warned that using impeachment to settle political scores would erode public confidence in democratic institutions and weaken legislative credibility.
2. ‘Wike Attempting To Scuttle Nigeria’s Democracy’ – PDP Chieftain, Iroegbu Blames APC, Tinubu
A member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dickson Iroegbu, has said that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), through the enabling of President Bola Tinubu, gave the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, the platform to destroy the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)and is now trying to scuttle Nigeria’s democracy.
Naija News reports that Iroegbu, also a member of the Obidient Movement, made this known during an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’ programme on Friday.
According to Iroegbu, the APC positioned Wike to wreck, undermine and possibly annihilate the PDP and having succeeded, the Minister now thinks he is bigger than President Tinubu.
He said, “The truth of the matter is that APC, through the enabling of the president, gave Wike the platform with which he has used now to almost attempt to scuttle democracy in Nigeria.
“They positioned him to wreck, undermine and possibly annihilate the PDP. And having almost succeeded in that, he now thinks himself bigger than the President.
“Because if you listened to the meetings he had with some of his supporters in Rivers state and all of that, you would hear him say nobody (he didn’t exempt anybody) can decide what happens in the state.
“Wike has become larger than life as created by the Tinubu’s administration and we hope that this their fight continues so that Nigerians can now take back their country.”
3. Fubara Not Safe In APC – Tonye Cole Raises Alarm
Former governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Tonye Cole, has said that the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, cannot be recognised as a lawful member of the APC in Rivers.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television, Cole stated that Fubara aligned himself with the wrong faction.
Naija News reports that Fubara defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC in December 2025, a move publicly welcomed by the party’s national leadership.
He was subsequently presented with his APC membership card by Tony Okocha, who leads a party faction in Rivers.
However, Cole stated that the Emeka Beke-led group remains the legitimate leadership of the APC in Rivers.
Cole said the governor made the “wrong” choice by joining the Okocha faction.
He insisted that Fubara cannot be lawfully recognised as a member of the APC in Rivers until he aligns with the Beke-led faction.
Cole, however, noted that Fubara’s defection itself was a smart political decision.
4. We Led The War To Deliver Tinubu In Rivers State – Wike
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has boasted that he led the war that delivered victory to President Bola Tinubu in Rivers State during the 2023 presidential election.
Wike stated this in Port Harcourt Local Government Area of Rivers State while tackling supporters of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar who are now backing Tinubu.
He fumed that the supporters had failed to give Atiku 10 per cent of their votes during the 2023 presidential election but had now chosen to support Tinubu.
He warned that nobody would be allowed to lead Tinubu’s campaign in the state, adding that nobody would push him out.
Wike said, “In 2023, we led the war to deliver President Tinubu in Rivers State. Those who supported Atiku in 2023 and couldn’t give him 10% are now saying that they’re going to lead President Tinubu’s campaign in Rivers State.
“Is it possible? Nobody in this state can push us out. We have led the war and don’t be bothered about the abuses.”
5. Why Mutfwang Remains PDP Governor Despite Defection To APC – Jang
Former Governor of Plateau State, Jonah David Jang, has stated that despite Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), he remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Speaking to party stakeholders at a press conference in Jos on Friday, he argued that Mutfwang remains the PDP governor until the APC gives him its mandate in 2027.
Jang insisted that Mutfwang still holds the mandate of the PDP given to him by the people of the state and advised people to stop addressing him as an APC governor.
“His Excellency, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang remains the PDP Governor despite his recent defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress. Until the APC in the state gives him another mandate come 2027, that is when he will cease to be a PDP Governor,” Jang said.
He, however, argued that the wave of defections by politicians “toward a political convergence under one dominant party” amounts to a dangerous march, will lead to a one-party state, and must be resisted by all democrats.
6. Bandits Reportedly Form Parallel Govt In Kano, Katsina Forests
Armed bandits operating in parts of Kano and Katsina States have reportedly formed a parallel system of governance within key forest reserves in the region.
Naija News learnt that a conflict and crisis journalist covering insecurity in Nigeria’s northwest, Bakatsine, disclosed the development, citing an investigative outlet, MA’ASUMAH.
According to Bakatsine, the armed groups have taken control of Falgore Forest in Doguwa Local Government Area of Kano State and Rugu Forest in Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State.
Bakatsine explained that the forests sit at the heart of the Kano–Katsina food belt.
The bandits are reportedly demanding up to ₦50,000 per acre from sugarcane growers before harvest, collecting illegal farm taxes and issuing threats against non-compliant farmers.
However, farmers who refuse to pay the imposed levies face intimidation, crop destruction, and the risk of violent attacks, forcing many to abandon their farmlands entirely.
Sugarcane farmers are reportedly the primary targets, though maize production has also been affected.
At the time of filing this report, no official response had been issued by any government authority.
7. Why It Is Impossible For Me To Marry Aisha Buhari – Pantami
Former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Pantami, has dismissed reports that he is planning to marry former First Lady, Aisha Buhari.
There have been speculations that the duo were set to tie the knot. The rumour gained traction after a supposed wedding invitation card began circulating on social media.
The wedding invitation card suggested that the former minister and the widow of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari were set to wed.
The invitation, however, carried no wedding date or verifiable details.
However, speaking during an interview with PRNigeria, Pantami described the claim as false, baseless and completely impossible.
The former minister stated that he was shocked by the rumours, stressing that the late President Buhari was a father figure to him.
“Aisha Buhari is a mother to us. It is disturbing that such a story could be fabricated.
“President Buhari was like a father to us, and his wife is regarded as a mother. Such a claim is not only false but impossible,” Pantami said.
Pantami urged the public to ignore the report, warning against the spread of misinformation on social media platforms.
8. Chimamanda Adichie Alleges Medical Negligence Over Son’s Death
Renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has alleged medical negligence in the circumstances surrounding the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi, who died on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.
Arise News reported on Saturday that Adichie’s media team confirmed she authored a detailed statement on the incident. The statement, according to her representatives, was initially shared privately with family members and close friends.
In the account, Adichie said her son “would be alive today if not for an incident” at Euracare Hospital on January 6, where he was taken for an MRI scan and the insertion of a central line.
Adichie explained that the family had travelled to Lagos for Christmas when her son fell ill.
“We were in Lagos for Christmas. Nkanu had what we first thought was just a cold, but soon turned into a very serious infection, and he was admitted to Atlantis Hospital,” she said.
She added that arrangements had already been made for the child to be flown to the United States the next day, January 7, with travelling doctors, noting that a team at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore was on standby to receive him.
According to her, the US medical team requested a lumbar puncture test and an MRI scan, which led to a referral to Euracare Hospital, “which was said to be the best place to have the procedures done.”
Adichie said Nkanu was sedated with propofol to prevent movement during the MRI and central line procedure, while she waited outside the theatre.
9. ‘Wizkid FC Is The Most Ignorant Fanbase, No Respect’ – Seun Kuti Blows Hot Over Comparison With Fela
Nigerian Grammy-nominated singer, Seun Kuti, has slammed the fanbase of award-winning singer, Wizkid, known as Wizkid FC, over the comparison with his late father cum Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
Naija News reports that Seun, during a recent Instagram livestream, said it is an insult to refer to Wizkid as the modern-day equivalent of his father.
While describing Wizkid fans as the most ignorant fanbase in the world, Seun warned them to stop comparing the ‘Ojuelegba’ crooner with Fela.
He said, “Wizkid FC keep Fela’s name out of your mouths. You try to claim that your fake artiste is the new Fela. Then when you people saw that the shoes were to big to fill and people like me also did not allow you to get away with those insults… It is actually an insult [to compare Wizkid to Fela].
“You people have no respect. I like it when people don’t have respect as a form of defiance. If your lack of respect came from a place of defiance, I will respect it. But your lack of respect came from a place of ignorance…
“Wizkid fans are online disrespecting Fela again. Why must you always involve Fela in your petty discussions? The overzealousnes of some of fans has significantly affected the music industry negatively. Some artists can’t even collaborate because of fan rivalries.
“I think Wizkid FC is the most ignorant fanbase in the world… You need to stop misbehaving. Concentrate on your artist. Can’t you enjoy their music without comparing it to something else? Do you know why you cannot enjoy your artist’s music without comparing it to something else? It is because the music does not fill your spirit. You can pretend to be enjoying it, but spiritually, you are not satisfied.”
10. AFCON 2025: Super Eagles Of Nigeria Humble Algeria To Book Semi-Final Clash With Morocco
Nigeria’s Super Eagles produced a commanding display on Saturday evening to brush aside Algeria 2-0 and seal a place in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria produced a commanding display today, January 10, to brush aside Algeria 2-0 and seal a place in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Goals early in the second half from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams settled the quarter-final contest, as Nigeria outclassed their North African opponents.
After a cagey opening period, the breakthrough arrived just two minutes after the restart. A teasing delivery from Bruno Onyemaechi caught the Algerian defence flat-footed and left Osimhen with a beautiful header from close range.
Algeria attempted to respond but found Nigeria’s back line difficult to penetrate. The Super Eagles, well-drilled and disciplined, continued to control the tempo and doubled their advantage in the 57th minute with a move of real quality.
Osimhen turned provider, slipping a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Akor Adams. The forward kept his nerve, sold the goalkeeper with a clever dummy and calmly lifted the ball into the net.
From that moment, the outcome felt inevitable. The Super Eagles dominated possession, created the clearer chances and looked capable of adding to their tally.
Adams came close to a second goal when his header struck the post, while Alex Iwobi and Bright Osayi-Samuel both tested Algeria’s defensive resolve.
Algeria, led from the touchline by Vladimir Petkovic, struggled to cope with Nigeria’s intensity and movement. Even the introduction of fresh legs, including the withdrawal of Riyad Mahrez on the hour mark, failed to change the pattern of the game.
