According to the police, officers were alerted to reports of a stabbing at about 12:35 pm on Wednesday, December 31, along Grove Street, Lewisham.

Naija News understands that emergency responders, including officers from the Metropolitan Police, the London Ambulance Service, and London’s Air Ambulance, were immediately dispatched to the scene.

The statement disclosed that Onetufo was found with stab wounds to the chest and was promptly attended to by paramedics.

Despite urgent medical intervention, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers attended the scene alongside the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance, where a 23-year-old man was treated for a stab wound to the chest.

“Sadly, despite the best efforts of paramedics, he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. He has since been named as John Temitope Onetufo from Deptford.

Providing an update on the investigation, the Met Police confirmed that two suspects, a 17-year-old boy and a 23-year-old man, were arrested on January 2 in connection with the killing.

The suspects are currently being questioned as detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal attack.

Detective Chief Inspector Samantha Townsend, who is leading the investigation, described the arrests as a significant breakthrough while appealing to members of the public with useful information to come forward.

She said, “My team has worked relentlessly over recent days to pursue every line of enquiry, and I can confirm that two arrests have now been made in connection with this tragic incident.

“This is a significant development, but our investigation remains ongoing as we work to establish the full circumstances surrounding what happened.

“I want to extend my deepest sympathies to John’s family and friends. We remain committed to finding answers and ensuring those responsible are brought to justice.

The killing of Onetufo highlights the persistent problem of knife-related violence in the United Kingdom, which has claimed the lives of several people, including Nigerians.

It was reported on August 6, 2025, that a 60-year-old Nigerian woman, Nkiru Chima, was found dead with multiple stab wounds in her apartment in Romford.

The Met Police had said officers responded to a distress report from the British Transport Police, and upon arrival, discovered Chima’s lifeless body bearing multiple stab injuries.
