Good morning Nigeria. Welcome to the Naija News roundup of top newspaper headlines in Nigeria for today, Tuesday, 16th December, 2025

1. ‘Coalition With Buhari Achieved Historic Victory, Unseating Incumbent President’ – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has recounted how a coalition with the late former President Muhammadu Buhari led to the removal of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Naija News reports that Buhari, Tinubu, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) worked against Jonathan’s 2015 reelection.

Speaking during the launch of Buhari’s official biography, “From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari” at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu recalled his political sojourn with the late former President, saying his predecessor left behind a reputation of integrity.

The president also noted the growth of their political alliance and the APC, stressing that the 2014 coalition is now the fastest-growing political party in Africa today.

2. Supreme Court Ruling On Rivers Emergency ‘Dangerous Democratic Bend’ – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised a strident alarm over the Supreme Court’s ruling on the President’s use of emergency powers, warning that the interpretation of the judgment poses “grave dangers” to Nigeria’s democratic landscape.

Naija News reports that the PDP was reacting to the Supreme Court ruling that affirmed the authority of the President to declare a State of Emergency and suspend elected officials.

While respecting the finality of the court, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, stated their deep concern over the judgement is anchored on the potential for the ruling to allow the Presidency to dismantle the democratic structures of a federating unit.

The PDP argued that to interpret the ruling as empowering the President to remove – even temporarily – an elected Governor, Deputy Governor, or House of Assembly is dangerous.

The party stressed that no person or institution, other than the State House of Assembly or a court of law, is empowered to remove a Governor during their constitutional term.

3. Insecurity: Police Announce Resumption Of Tinted Glass Permit Enforcement

The Nigeria Police Force has announced that it is set to resume the enforcement of the tinted glass permit in the country, pending the final determination of the matter by the court.

The resumption was announced in a statement on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin.

He explained that the enforcement is part of efforts to fight the rising wave of insecurity in the country, as it has been discovered that some individuals and criminal groups are using the opportunity of the suspended enforcement on tinted glass permits to carry out armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes.

According to Hundeyin, the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit will resume on 2nd January, 2026.

The statement also clarified that the court did not at any point restrain the Nigeria Police Force from enforcing the provisions of the tinted glass permit law, but the policy was suspended by the Force to give citizens the opportunity to comply, but the enforcement has to be brought back pending the final resolution of the court in view of current security trends in the country.

4. We Are Faithful Only To The Mandate – EFCC Replies Atiku, Peter Obi, Others

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied claims that it has turned itself into a weapon used by the ruling class against opposition politicians.

The EFCC, in a statement on Monday, released via its 𝕏 account, clarified that it is only faithful to its mandate of fighting corruption and nothing else.

The anti-graft agency added that its activities are without bias to political affiliations and all persons are treated equally.

The denial comes after a statement jointly signed by some opposition politicians, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi and others in which the EFCC, Nigeria Police and other state institutions were accused of being increasingly being deployed for “selective justice” with the ultimate aim of weakening opposition voices and dismantling the nation’s multi-party democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

However, the EFCC, in its response, said its mandate is strictly to tackle corruption and not opposition politicians.

To back up its claim, the EFCC submitted that the commission has arrested and prosecuted suspects from both the ruling party and opposition parties, as well as non-political actors.

The Commission stated that it won’t succumb to any form of blackmail from the opposition politicians and cautioned them against poisoning the minds of Nigerians against the EFCC.

However, the headline inflation rate declined to 14.45 per cent year on year, compared with 16.05 per cent recorded in October 2025.

6. ‘Buhari Made A Big Mistake’ – Dangote Reveals Why No Investor Will Buy Nigeria’s Refineries

Africa’s richest man and president of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has declared that the business environment in Nigeria is not conducive for any investor to be interested in buying the refineries operated by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Limited.

Naija News reports that Dangote made the bold statement during a press briefing on Sunday in Lagos, noting that even if the government puts up the refineries for sale, buyers would not turn up.

According to him, the operating and regulatory environment makes it difficult for any investor to want to come into the nation’s refinery sub-sector.

“The higher price is that nobody will come and invest in this sort of thing. Even if the NNPC today wants to sell the refineries, there can never be a buyer. Why? Because the environment is not conducive for anybody to come and put their money and set up a refinery,” he stated.

Dangote also blamed the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari for making a mistake in the oil sector by putting a trader as a regulator, leading to a case of regulatory mismanagement.

7. Bigiano Claims Authorship Of Davido’s Hit Song Dami Duro

Nigerian singer, Bigiano, has claimed that he wrote the hit song Dami Duro for fellow artiste, Davido, saying he was responsible for the hook of the popular track.

Naija News reports that the Shayo crooner made the claim during a recent interview with content creator, Akin Abolade, where he spoke about his career, his break from music, and his contribution to one of Davido’s biggest early hits.

According to Bigiano, his input played a key role in the success of the song, which was released in 2011 and helped launch Davido into mainstream fame.

“I wrote Dami Duro for Davido. I wrote the hook,” he said during the interview.

Despite the claim, Bigiano is not officially credited as a co-writer on the song.

8. I’m Coming To Nigeria To Slap You – Bobrisky Tackles Peller For Attempting Suicide Over Breakup With Jarvis

Controversial crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, has reacted to the recent controversy involving TikTok creator Peller and his car crash, which followed issues linked to his relationship with Jarvis.

Naija News reports that in a post shared on his Instagram page, Bobrisky condemned Peller’s actions and described his behaviour as unnecessary and reckless.

He questioned why Peller would allow relationship problems to push him into actions that could damage his life and property, especially after recently acquiring a new car.

Bobrisky also claimed he knew someone he considered more suitable for Peller and said the influencer should not risk his future over emotional distress tied to a breakup.

He added that Peller needed to think clearly and stop allowing love matters to control his decisions.

The internet sensation went further to advise young people to always value themselves first in relationships.

According to him, loving a partner is normal, but self-respect and self-care should come before any emotional attachment.

9. Akinsanmiro Breaks Down In Tears After AFCON Call-Up, Opens Up On Long Road To Super Eagles

Nigeria midfielder Ebenezer Akinsanmiro has revealed how he felt about his first Super Eagles invitation, describing it as a moment he never saw coming after years of setbacks, self-doubt and sacrifice.

The Pisa FC midfielder, owned by Inter Milan, was named in Nigeria’s 28-man squad for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco. For Akinsanmiro, the call-up marked the fulfilment of a dream that once felt painfully distant.

“I wasn’t expecting it to be honest,” Ebenezer Akinsanmiro told NFF TV. “Because I was first called up during the qualifier for the World Cup, I was called up, then I got injured. So, when they called me up, when I saw the invitation, to be honest, I called someone closer to me, and I started crying because it had been a dream for so long.”

The 20-year-old admitted that representing Nigeria at the senior level had been a lifelong ambition, one he chased through the youth ranks without immediate reward.

“I have been trying to play for the national team for so long, since the U17, U20, and I think, like then, maybe I am not good enough. I just felt like maybe when I keep on pushing and give my possible best, maybe one day, I will be called up to the national team,” he said.

Akinsanmiro’s journey has been anything but straightforward. Growing up, he had limited access to live football and instead developed his love for the game by playing rather than watching.
