Cameroon Face Injury Woes Ahead Of DR Congo FIFA World Cup Playoff Clash
Cameroon’s hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup are under threat after midfielder André-Frank Zambo Anguissa and striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting picked up injuries during training in Morocco ahead of the African playoffs.
The Indomitable Lions are set to face DR Congo in the World Cup playoffs second semi-final today. Victory would see them advance to the final on Sunday against the winner of Gabon and Nigeria.
Reports indicate that Anguissa suffered a muscular injury during an especially demanding training session. On the same day, Choupo-Moting was also sidelined due to injury.
Both players are undergoing further medical tests, leaving their participation against DR Congo in serious doubt.
Naija News reports Nine African teams have already secured direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup, to be hosted in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. One more African team will have a shot at the intercontinental playoffs scheduled for March 2026.
Cameroon earned their playoff spot after finishing second in Group D, following a 0-0 draw with Angola on the final day of qualifying. They ended the group four points behind Cape Verde and ahead of Libya.
Despite the setbacks, Cameroon’s captain Vincent Aboubakar and forward Bryan Mbeumo are expected to carry the team’s hopes.
Fans and football pundits alike are waiting for updates from the team’s medical staff as the Lions prepare for what could be a decisive step toward the World Cup.
