Bandits Kill Policeman, Abduct Two Guards In Kwara

A police officer, identified as Corporal Salisu Shamaki, was killed on Tuesday when suspected bandits attacked a mining company owned by a Chinese national in Egboro, Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State.

Sources who spoke with Daily Trust said Shamaki, who was attached to the company, was gunned down during the raid, while two private security guards manning the facility were abducted.

The whereabouts of the abducted guards remained unknown as of Wednesday night.

Residents said the slain policeman was killed in Gbuaji settlement while guarding a Chinese expatriate who, however, was not present at the site at the time of the incident.

“The body of the officer has since been moved to Patigi for burial,” a local source disclosed.

Confirming the attack in a telephone interview with Daily Trust, the state Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, said one officer was killed, but dismissed reports that policemen were abducted.

He said, “At Egboro, Patigi Local Government Area, a police officer was killed at a Chinese company and two of the guards who were guiding the company were abducted. Properties within the facility were also vandalised. The Chinese expatriate has not been to the facility for the past three months.

“Unfortunately, a police officer died in the process among the four that were there. Contrary to reports, the policemen that they said were abducted are with me now, and they are presently giving the briefing of what happened.”
