Nigeria Defends Bid To Host 2030 Commonwealth Games In Abuja

Nigeria has taken a bold step toward making history as the first African nation to host the Commonwealth Games, after presenting its official bid in London on Wednesday.

A delegation led by National Sports Commission Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade delivered the pitch to the Commonwealth Games Federation, highlighting Abuja 2030 as a chance to create a unifying legacy that reflects the spirit of the Commonwealth.

Olopade, writing on his 𝕏 page shortly after the event, expressed optimism about Nigeria’s chances.

“We are very delighted to have presented an all-inclusive bid in our quest to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, which, by the way, will be the first ever Commonwealth Games on African soil,” he said.

He added that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu personally addressed the gathering in London.

“Our presentation today in London was led by Mr. President himself, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, who delivered a very powerful speech to the Commonwealth Games Federation on why Nigeria is determined to stage the best ever Games yet to be seen in the history of the Commonwealth in 2030,” Olopade said.

The Abuja bid emphasizes sports excellence, cultural exchange, and youth empowerment, while also tapping into Nigeria’s fast-growing creative economy.
