Anwar El Ghazi Set To Sue Mainz For Terminating His Contract Over Isreal-Ghaza Crisis

Dutch winger, Anwar El Ghazi is suing German Bundesliga club, Mainz for wrongful termination of his contract.

Naija News reported that Mainz terminated the contract of Anwar El Ghazi on November 2, due to a series of social media posts he made about the conflict between Israel and Gaza.

Mainz was reportedly informed about the case by El Ghazi’s legal team. They stated that they would not be commenting further “because it is an ongoing legal proceeding.”

Anwar El Ghazi who is currently 28-year-old has been the target of a barrage of derogatory remarks on his social media pages. These remarks have included demands for him to be classified as a “terrorist” and threats of death against him and his family.

On October 17, Mainz first suspended El Ghazi after he shared the controversial phrase “from the river to the sea” on social media. This statement implies Israel’s destruction, according to critics.

Some pro-Palestinian activists, however, disagree with that interpretation, claiming that most of the people chanting it support an end to Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and blockade of Gaza rather than the destruction of Israel.

The statement from El Ghazi “took a position on the Middle East conflict in a manner that wasn’t tolerable for the club,” Mainz claimed.

The former Everton and Aston Villa player said he stood “for peace above everything” when Mainz threatened to terminate his contract on October 27. Three days later, he returned to the club.

Afterward, Anwar El Ghazi declared, “I do not distance myself from what I said and stand for humanity and on the side of the oppressed until the last day I breathe”.

The German team swiftly ended his contract “in response to the player’s statements and posts on social media.”
