The quarter-final round of the 2023 Women’s World Cup is officially over which means that four teams have ended their journey in the tournament in the last 48 hours.

The first team that booked their place in the next round of the competition were the Spain Women’s national team who beat the Netherlands 2-1 on Friday.

A spot-kick goal from Mariona Caldentey in the 81st minute and a goal in the extra-time from Paralluelo Ayingono took the Spanish team to the semi-finals of the tournament.

Following that, Japan, a team that looked like they were ready to win their third Women’s World Cup, were beaten by Sweden 2-1 in the quarter-finals.

A first-half goal from Ilestedt and a second-half goal from Angeldal made Japan’s 81st minute goal inconsequential as they crashed out of the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

Earlier today, the co-hosts, Australia, fought for 120 minutes to ensure that France are knocked out of the tournament. After a barren draw, the two countries went into a penalty shootout which recorded 13 goals.

It ended 7-6 in favour of Australia as the co-hosts reach the semi-finals for the first time in their history.

The last quarter-finals clash in the 2023 Women’s World Cup was between England and Colombia. Even though the Lionesses were without their highest goalscorer, Lauren James, who has been suspended for two games for stepping on the back of Super Falcons’ defender Michelle Alozie, they scored two goals to beat Colombia 2-1.

Goals from Hemp and Russo were all England needed to qualify for the 2023 Women’s World Cup for the third time in their history.

Below are the fixtures for the 2023 Women’s World Cup semi-finals

1. Spain Vs Sweden, 9 a.m., August 15.

2. Australia Vs England, 11 a.m., August 16.
