The Anambra State Police Command has debunked the alleged killings of some residents by unknown gunmen at a police checkpoint in the state.

The Nation had earlier reported that many feared dead after unknown gunmen allegedly attacked a police checkpoint at the Ihiala-Uli axis in Ihiala local government area of the state.

An eye witness had said that the incident which occurred around 10:30 am between the Ihiala-Uli axis in Ihiala local government area left many injured.

The eye witness recounts that as commuters ran for their lives with gunmen shooting sporadically, security operatives removed their uniforms and took cover in nearby bushes and houses.

Commercial bus operators plying the route reportedly abandoned the Onitsha- Owerri expressway for fear of being killed.

Reacting to the development, the state police public relations officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, debunked the reports, saying they were false

He said that “It is not true. There has been a patrol led by the area commander with other security agencies in the state going on in the area since morning, up till now.

“There is no report of any such please.”
