The Federal Government says lack of respect for the immigration laws was responsible for the hostile treatment of Nigerians in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Naija News reports that the spokesman of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Francisca Omayuli, made this known in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

Naija News recalls that a video showing some Nigerians stranded at the Dubai international airport surfaced on social media, with at least 20 Nigerians stuck at the airport and their passports seized.

Reacting to the development, some Nigerians took to various social media platforms to condemn the treatment of the travellers in UAE.

In a reaction, the Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said that some Nigerians who were sent back from Dubai tried to manipulate the new UAE visa rules.

According to Omayuli, Nigerians who were stranded in Dubai were issued family visas but arrived in the UAE without any family members in the country.

She, therefore, advised Nigerians to respect the new visa rules of the UAE Government and that of other countries.

The statement reads: “Consequently, they were denied entry and advised to return to their country and apply for the appropriate visas.

“However, those persons allowed entry into the country have their family members in the UAE, while those who claimed their family members were on another flight were told to wait at the airport pending their arrival.

“The general public is invited to note and be guided that the Government of the UAE has introduced a new visa regime and has stopped issuing tourist visas to persons under the age of 40 years, except for those applying for family visas.

“It is, therefore, instructive for prospective visa applicants to indicate clearly their visa preferences without any ambiguity and also respect the immigration laws of other countries so as to avoid unwarranted treatments.”
