In what could best be described as a move to foster unity and togetherness amongst its staff, Checkers Africa Limited organised its maiden Checkers Cup football match.

Held at the excellent Eagles club soccer field in the Surulere area of Lagos State, two branches of the internationally renowned Custard locked lockedhorns for the prize money of N150,000.

The match attracted the presence of top management staff of Checkers Custard including Karan Checker, the Managing Director of Checkers Africa Limited, who played an active and energetic role all through the event.

Just before kicking the game off, Checkers MD promised to hold the tournament every year on June 11.

Naija News reports that Mr Karan also promised that participating teams would be from their branches across Nigeria.

It did not take long after kickoff for team Mushin (team yellow) to grab the first goal of the game. The goalkeeper of team Ikorodu (team blue) failed to gather a shot properly, allowing Mushin to score a rebound to make it 1-0.

Team Ikorodu later equalised after capitalising on a poorly cleared corner kick. They pounced on a stray ball and took a shot from range to score the equaliser.

2-1: Team Mushin later restored their lead with a well taken penalty after their attacker was clumsily brought down in the eighteen yard box.

Mushin went into the half-time break leading 2-1 and hoping to keep the scoreline favourable at the end of 90 minutes.

Our correspondent who was live at the Checkers Cup disclosed that the second half commenced with a midfield battle between the two team.

Team Ikorodu would later restore parity after taking a poor freekick and jumping on a sloppy clearance from Mushin to place a well timed shot from outside the box.

In the 50th minute, Ikorodu would have taken the lead for the first time in the game but for a wonderful save from the Mushin keeper kept the scores at 2-2.

Another chance went begging as the Ikorodu team missed another clear chance at goal after a freekick.

Ikorodu finally took the lead in the 68th minute with a looping shot from just outside the box to make the scores 2-3.

Ikorodu later extended their lead with a well-taken goal. The scorer dribbled his way through the yellow defence before burying his shot at the top left corner of the goalpost leaving the keeper helpless, just before the referee blew the whistle to mark the end of a thrilling encounter.

Speaking at the end of the football match, Karan Checker said the idea of organising the football match is to bring a smile to the faces of all their staff and give them a good time, adding that sport is a good avenue to achieve that.

He however stated that he was rooting for the marketing team (Mushin) but the production team (Ikorodu) did a great job by winning the game.

Mr Karan, who noted that Checkers staff are happy with the tournament, recalled that he earlier stated that the Checkers Cup will be played every year and it will involve all its branches across Nigeria.
