JUST IN: Okonjo-Iweala To Be Sworn-In As WTO Boss Today

The United States has revealed the reason behind its decision to support South Korea’s Yoo Myung-Hee as the Director General of World Trade Organisation, WTO.

Former Minister of Finance in Nigeria, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is the leading contender for the position.

Okonjo-Iweala was recommended on Wednesday by the nomination committee to the 164 member countries for appointment as Director General.

America in its statement noted they the body must be handled by someone who is experienced in trading.

The office of the US Trade Representative  advised President Donald Trump on trade policy.

It said Yoo had “distinguished herself” as a trade expert and “has all the skills necessary to be an effective leader of the organisation”

“This is a very difficult time for the WTO and international trade”, the statement read.

“There have been no multilateral tariff negotiations in 25 years, the dispute settlement system has gotten out of control, and too few members fulfill basic transparency obligations. The WTO is badly in need of major reform.”
