Ukraine’s Air Defences Intercept Russian Drones Over Kryvyi Rih, Energy Infrastructure Hit

Ukraine’s air forces successfully downed nine out of fourteen Russian drones during an overnight assault, targeting the central city of Kryvyi Rih. This incident, marking the second drone attack in as many days on President Volodymyr Zelenskiy‘s hometown, has inflicted significant damage on the city’s energy infrastructure.

Mayor Oleksandr Vilkul reported that the drone strikes resulted in widespread electricity outages, plunging thousands of Kryvyi Rih residents into darkness. The disruption extended to water supplies and heating systems in several districts, exacerbating the residents’ plight as temperatures dipped just below freezing. “Hospitals were switched to generators for electricity supplies,” Vilkul disclosed, underlining the severity of the situation as critical services scrambled to maintain operations amidst the chaos.

The Ukrainian air force identified the unmanned aerial vehicles as Iranian-made Shahed drones, shot down across four regions in the country’s centre and south.
