North Korea’s Kim Jong Un Calls for Accelerated War Preparations Amid US Tensions

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called for an accelerated preparation for war in response to what he perceives as “unprecedented confrontational moves” by the United States. In a speech delivered at a key meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party, Kim outlined policy directions for 2024, emphasizing the need for the military, munitions industry, nuclear weapons, and civil defense sectors to hasten their war preparations. This directive comes as part of North Korea’s ongoing efforts to counter the US and its allies, including South Korea and Japan.

Kim Jong Un’s speech, delivered on the second day of the Plenary Meeting of the Workers’ Party Central Committee, reportedly touched on the situation on the Korean Peninsula and detailed policies on nuclear and missile development. These developments are part of North Korea’s five-year defense program, now entering its fourth year in 2024. The North Korean leader’s emphasis on military readiness suggests a continued focus on weapons testing and military modernization.

Moreover, Kim Jong Un highlighted the intention to expand strategic cooperation with “anti-imperialist independent” countries. This includes bolstering ties with Russia, following a September summit between Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The move indicates Pyongyang’s ongoing efforts to strengthen alliances in the face of mounting international pressure and sanctions.
