His father, John Severance, worked as a manager at IBM and often had to go to work. According to Severance, his family had moved to different parts of the world more than 10 times by the time he was 11 years old. His family’s last residence abroad was Libya. However, they fled the country just before the outbreak of hostilities, which lasted six days.
