Stella Stevens was born Estelle Caro Eggleston on October 1, 1938, in Yazoo City, Mississippi, United States. She was her parents’ only daughter; Thomas Ellett Eggleston, insurance salesman and Dovey Estelle Caro, nurse. Stella would come to spend most of her childhood in Memphis, Tennessee, where her parents had settled when she was 4 years old.
She graduated from Memphis Tech High School in 1955, she went to Memphis State College to study medicine, hoping to follow in her mother’s footsteps. It was in college that Stevens fell in love with acting and sought to pursue it full time. She began acting professionally in the late 1950s. Within a year, Stevens had had an influence in the film industry. She won the Golden Globe Award for New Star of the Year, thanks to her performance in Say One to Me (1959) which was her first film.
Stella Stevens quickly added modeling to her repertoire. For the rest of the 1960s, she impressed with roles in Girls! Girls! Girls!, Professor Nutty, and Eddie’s Father’s Parade. Stevens worked steadily in her career until the 1990s. Beginning in the new millennium, she became occasionally active.
