Lemonis, called Ricardo, was born in Beirut, Lebanon, to parents Abdallel and Nadia. He was born in the midst of civil war and foreign invasions on November 16, 1973. Four days after his birth, his parents abandoned him in an orphanage. Leo and Sophia Lemonis, a couple living in Miami, Florida, adopted him during his childhood on July 29, 1974. His father was Greek and his mother Lebanese.

Lemonis knew the auto industry through his childhood, his grandfather, Anthony Abraham, owned two of the largest Chevrolet dealerships in the United States, and Lee Iacocca served as a family friend and later mentor and financial investor to Marcus, lending him millions to start an RV company. Lemonis graduated from Christopher Columbus High School in 1991, graduated from Marquette University in Milwaukee in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in political science and a minor in criminology, and ran unsuccessfully as a Democrat for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. As CEO of Camping World, Lemonis first became involved with NASCAR in 2004, when driver John Andretti was financed by the company. In 2007, Lemonis and Camping World announced that they would take over sponsorship of the NASCAR East Series. They also confirmed sponsorship of the then-Craftsman Truck Series later that same year, renaming it the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, making the company one of the top three sponsors in the sport. In 2014, Lemonis and NASCAR partnered to extend Camping World’s Truck Series sponsorship through 2022.
