Katharine Juliet Ross was born on January 29, 1940 in LA, California. She is the only child of her parents, Dudley and Katharine. Katharine grew up in San Francisco and received her education from Las Lomas High School in Walnut Creek in 1957. After high school, she attended Santa Rosa Junior College.
There she took part in several schoolproductions, which made her fall in love with acting. She therefore decided to pursue a career in this direction and dropped out shortly after a year.
