Jonathan Scott Frakes was born on August 19, 1952 in a small town called Bellefonte in central Pennsylvania, USA. He was born to Dorris J. Frake’s Nee Yingling parents – his mother and Dr. James R. Frakes, his father, who was also a professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania.

His family had to move to the eastern part of Pennsylvania alongside his younger brother. The move was intended to allow his father to take a position at Lehigh University and remain close to his family. His father became a folklore at university and held the prestigious Fairchild Chair in American Literature until his death in 2002. Jonathan Frakes comes from a mixture of German and English descent.

As a young boy, Frakes was somewhat pushed towards jazz as his father was a big fan. Jonathan Frakes decided to develop his career further by moving to Boston in 1976 to pursue a master’s degree from Harvard University. After earning his master’s degree, Jonathan decided to become an actor and moved to New York to pursue his dream.

Although his dream wasn’t immediately fulfilled, due to the difficulty in finding roles, he decided to take on side jobs like moving furniture and a stint as Captain America for Marvel Comics. His roles in New York limited him to Broadway musicals, which wasn’t what he wanted, but at the admonition of his agent, he moved to Los Angeles in 1978.
