Jason Lee Whitlock was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on April 27, 1967 to James and Joyce Whitlock. Growing up was not peaceful for him, his father always betting instead of being at home with his family, his parents having divorced after eight years of marriage. Jason has a brother who was named after their father – James.

He loved sports growing up and was an active athlete throughout his teenage years. He attended Warren Central High School in Indianapolis where he actively participated in football. He was a very good offensive lineman and got a scholarship to Ball State University, where he earned a degree in journalism.

Jason began his career as a part-time reporter for The Herald-Times in Bloomington, Indiana, then moved to The Charlotte Observer as a reporter for a year. He worked for Ann Arbor News in 1992 for two years and was assigned to the University of Michigan.

He would join the Kansas City Star in 1994 and won the Scripps Howard Foundation Award for commentary journalism while with the Kansas City Star on March 7, 2008. He became the first sports journalist to win $10,000 in reward for this award. However, he left on August 16, 2010. He joined the ESPN online platform as a columnist and appeared on numerous television shows on ESPN. In 2006, Jason left ESPN for AOL after he was fired for harsh comments he made about his colleagues during an interview.
