He was born on September 3, 1960 in Antioch, Tennessee. There is no record of his high school education, but we do know that Dave earned a degree in finance and real estate from the College of Business Administration at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in 1982. He then became a real estate investor. with a portfolio of over $4 million. Tragedy struck, however, when his financier collapsed into a larger financial institution that demanded he repay his loans. Dave couldn’t repay those loans, and that taught him a bitter lesson in money management. He filed for bankruptcy because he lost everything, he was down – but not outside.

During his recovery, Ramsey developed a set of financial principles from his experience and the teachings of Larry Burkett, Ron Blue and Art Williams. His first book titled “Financial Peace” was written during this phase of his life in 1992.
