The defender was born in 1972 in New York City, United States of America. She has not revealed any information about her parents or siblings. Reportedly, her mother had risen from a secretary to an executive-level position at AT&T. As for her education, she had graduated from Princeton University in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in political science. During her university studies, she had focused mainly on Latin American social movements. Additionally, she received a master’s degree in arts and political science from Yale University in 1995.
She has also become a professor and has taught political science and African-American studies at Yale and Wesleyan University. Additionally, she had served as political director for Russell Simmons. She later also became the executive director of Citizen Change during the 2004 election season campaign.
She co-founded the Perception Institute, which is now called the American Values Institute in 2009. After Leana Wen’s termination on July 16, 2019, she was announced as the interim president of Planned Parenthood. She has also served on the boards of the New York Civil Liberties Union, the Center for Social Inclusion, and the Citizen Participation Lab.
