AJ McCarron is a popular and accomplished American quarterback who plays for the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League (NFL). He became the first quarterback to win back-to-back consensus national championships in the BCS era.

He was between life and death at a very young age.

This accident happened in Dog River, Alabama. The river has a length of 13 km, from the city of Mobile to Mobile Bay. Its brackish waters are targets and resting places for boaters and anglers on summer weekends. In August 1996, Tony McCarron and 5-year-old AJ were racing the waves on jet skis. AJ sat on his father’s lap, just behind the handlebars, while his cousin was in the passenger seat.

Unfortunately, the jet ski took over from a marine patrol boat and hit a buoy that was there to guide boaters down a channel in the river. Instinctively, a startled AJ grabbed the handlebars, where the speed control was and where the craft picked up speed.
His father lost control of the jet ski which at the time was heading straight for a pier. With one arm, he threw AJ’s cousin into the back of the boat; with the other, he threw AJ hopefully out of harm’s way. He described the injuries as his crushed face and his eyes hanging down by a tendon. It was believed that AJ McCarron was not going to make it out alive or come out of the incident late; mentally unstable and even blind. Regardless of any assumptions, AJ McCarron has moved on and come back stronger than ever.
