Residents of the Ajah area of Lagos State have lamented the closure of a major road link, claiming that a pregnant woman and a commercial motorcyclist were among the several persons that have lost their lives around the Jubilee Bridge, Ajah, along Lekki-Epe expressway due to the closure of the road.

Naija News gathered that the pregnant woman and the motocyclist died in September after a vehicle driving against traffic ran into them at the bridge.

The residents told Punch that the closure of NEPA road linking private residential estates, hospitals, fire service station and other places on Ado-Badore, Kazeem Oyifo and Olayinka Atiku streets during the construction of the bridge, had posed problems to vehicles and pedestrians.

According to an eye witness, Calistus, who is also a resident in the area said the closure of the link road had compelled people to endure many hours in traffic jam.

“Apart from the pregnant woman and the commercial motorcyclist that were killed, I have personally witnessed many accidents.

“Since NEPA Road was closed from the expressway during the construction of the bridge, vehicles that used the link road to get to their destinations on time can no longer do so. Now, everybody has to get to Ado-Badore Junction to either link other places or make a U-turn.

“As a result of this, some unruly motorists and commercial motorcyclists drive against traffic, especially at nights, injuring and killing innocent pedestrians.

“We appreciate the sanity the state government has brought around this area, we are only pleading for NEPA Road to be opened up to the expressway so that traffic can be eased and lives saved,” he said.

Mr. Ahmed Olayemi, also a resident, said the closure of the road had affected business activities in the area.

“The closure has also allowed miscreants to set up an illegal market on a portion of the road, thereby making it very difficult for those of us who own firms opposite the new bridge to either come in or go out.

“We are now using this medium to call on the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, to help us before the situation gets out of hands,” he said.
