Naija News understands that Small, who died on Wednesday, July 10, was praised for his performance in the World Cup final, where his brave tackles on giant New Zealand winger Jonah Lomu helped the Boks to a surprise victory at Ellis Park.

A statement credited to South Africa Rugby president Mark Alexander said: “He always played with the type of passion and courage that encapsulate what Springbok rugby stands for, and he lived his life in the same way.”

Naija News understands that the cause of James Small death has been attributed to a heart attack.

It was gathered that the former Springbok winger was taken to hospital on Tuesday, July 9, after suffering a suspected heart attack.

Former South Africa World Cup-winning winger, who scored 20 tries in 47 tests between 1992 and 1997, died at age 50.

South Africa Sports Minister Nathi Mthethwa has paid tribute to James Small, who passed away on Wednesday.

“James Small was not just a legend but one of those great players which their names will be written in our history of sports,” said Mthethwa.

“He was one of those who were instrumental alongside the class of 95 in fostering social cohesion and nation-building. We would never forget the role that the 1995 Springboks Rugby team played in breaking down the racial boundaries and making us one nation with one objective. This class of 95 inclusive of James Small, stood alongside our former statesman ‘Tata’ Nelson Mandela and demonstrated the importance of sport in eradicating racism and discrimination,” he concluded.

The All Blacks have paid tribute to James Small who passed away after a heart attack on Wednesday.

On Wednesday the All Blacks took to Twitter to express their sadness at Small’s death, calling him a “fierce competitor on the field and great friend off it”.

“We are saddened to learn that @Springboks great and 1995 @rugbyworldcup winner James Small has passed away. A fierce competitor on the field and great friend off it, James will be missed by the entire global rugby community. Rest In Peace, legend.”

The wife of former All Blacks superstar, Jonah Lomu, has sent her “thoughts and love” to the family of James Small after the Springbok wing died on Wednesday.

On Thursday, Lomu’s wife Nadene too to Twitter to pay an emotional tribute to Small.

“Rest Easy James Small, sending my thoughts, condolences, love, and hugs to your family at such a sad time ? you’ve made your mark, made many proud, now rest easy and enjoy Heaven with my Guardian Angel Jonah, you’re 95’ World Cup mate.”
