Who is Hilary Hahn?

Born November 27, 1979 in Lexington, Virginia, Hilary Hahn is an American violinist admired for her colossal techniques and keen sense of interpretation. The award-winning violinist is considered one of the best in the world, both as a soloist with orchestras and principal conductors and as a recitalist.

At the age of three, she began her first series of violin training at Baltimore & Peabody Institute’s Suzuki program before being mentored by the legendary Mrs. Klara Berkovich. In 1989, Hahn was admitted to the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia at the age of 10; there she became a pupil of Jascha Brodsky. At the age of eleven, she made her debut with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra before performing in major cities such as Philadelphia, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and New York.

At sixteen, she had already completed her requirements for a Bachelor of Music degree at the Curtis Institute. However, she chose to stay for many years in order to pursue electives until she officially graduated in May 1999, at the age of 19. with Felix Galimir and signed his first label with Sony Classical.

At the age of 21, Hahn appeared at the Mister Rogers.Quartier conference, discussing his early experiences with the violin and performing a solo and a duet. Later, she was declared the best young classical musician by Time Magazine. Grammy winner Hilary Hahn has twice been recognized worldwide for her captivating song interpretations, stage presence and commitment to a wide range of repertoire as well as recently commissioned music.

She has released 16 albums and in addition to Hilary performs regularly with the world’s leading orchestras in popular recital series in Europe, Asia, North and South America. Higdon’s concerto, commissioned by Hilary, won the Pulitzer Prize in 2009.

Her latest album is a recording of Charles’ Ives Violin Sonatas, an album she celebrated by hosting a concert at John Zorn’s The Stone in New York. Outside of the classical world, Hahn has collaborated with Tom Brosseau, Josh Ritter and Chris Thile. Although she rose to prominence early on performing some of the popular works of the classical canon, she also built a reputation as a champion of contemporary music.

Hilary Hahn plays an 1865 Vuillaume violin, which previously belonged to Russian violinist Samuel Lande, a friend of Klara Berkovich, her first teacher.

Facts About Her Husband, Marriage and Family

Hilary’s husband is Volker Bertelmann, a German prepared piano master. He is popularly known and called Hauschka. Hauschka made a name for himself with his seven albums which are performances prepared on the piano. Drawing inspiration from piano techniques such as Eric Satie, John Cage, Max Richter and Yann Tiersen, the German great became a prolific musician.

Hauschka has worked with several musicians, including Hahn. Their first collaborative album was Silfra – the result of a collaboration that developed gradually and biographyally over more than two years. The two met at Greenhouse Studios in Reykjavik, Iceland through American folk musician, Tom Brosseau.

Tom’s 2007 album Grand Forks featured Hahn as a guest performer. During the concert, Brosseau made sure that Hauschka would be among the audience. The pianist and violinist met briefly after the concert in a friendly atmosphere, there was no talk of working together. A few weeks later, in San Francisco, Hauschka was performing with Brosseau and the Magik * Magik Orchestra when the violinist joined them on stage. This marked the beginning of their collaboration.

The couple’s collaboration isn’t limited to their distinct musical background, also allowing them to meld their different approaches to music into a creative and dynamic voice. So the world has acquired wonderful music.
