El Chapo grew up from poverty in rural Mexico to become the ruler of a world drug empire and makes billions of dollars from the business. He is the former of an international crime syndicate known as the Sinaloa Cartel and currently faces 17 federal indictments in the United States.

Born Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera on September 4, 1957 in La Tuna, Badiraguato, Sinaloa, Mexico, the son of Emilio Guzmán Bustillos and María Consuelo Loera Pérez was labeled a drug kingpin. His father, officially a rancher, also grew marijuana for local traders. Guzman got into the drug business through his father, helping him in his marijuana business early in his adult life.

He later formed his own cartel, known as the Sinaloa Cartel, in 1988 following the arrest of his second employer, Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo. As head of the cartel, he oversaw the mass production, smuggling, and distribution of cocaine, methamphetamines, marijuana,and heroin in the US and Europe.

Guzman is considered the highest exporter of drugs to the United States in the history of drug trafficking and this was made possible because he created distribution cells in the United States and also built long-distance tunnels near the border. As a result of the deal, the drug dealer became extremely powerful and wealthy, even being named one of the most powerful men in the world by Forbes from 2009 to 2013.

After his activities in drug trafficking in Guzman fled to Guatemala, was first captured in 1993 and extradited. A 20-year prison sentence followed for the charge. However, before completing his time in prison, he escaped in 2001 but was caught in Mexico in 2014. In 2015, he escaped again through a tunnel 10 meters below his prison cell.

The notorious drug lord was eventually captured in 2015 and extradited to the United States the following year, where he pleaded guilty to a number of charges but was found guilty.

After escaping prison in 2015, El Chapo was recaptured on January 8, 2016 and subsequently extradited to the United States on January 19, 2017 to face the 17-count indictment against him. These charges include drug trafficking, money laundering, murder, illegal possession of firearms,kidnapping, murder among many others. His extradition provided that he would not be sentenced to death if found guilty of murder.

El Chapo and Emma’s love story began during a party held in 2006 in the hamlet of La Angostura, Durango, Mexico. Emma had a boyfriend at the time and was dancing with him at the party when someone told her that El Chapo wanted to dance with her, so she was obliged.

A few months after they first met Emma, ​​who was 17 at the time, decided to enter the beauty pageant of the 2007 Canelas Coffee and Guava Festival. One of the requirements of the competition was that each of the contestants throw a party in honor of their candidacy, and Emma hosted hers on Epiphany. That same day, the drug lord stormed the city with hundreds of guards to announce his intention to marry Emma.

Though Emma did tell the Los Angeles Times that she ended up winning the beauty pageant because she received a lot of votes herself, and many reports said that El Chapo had to sprinkle the judges with some money to announce Emma as the winner.

Guzman, then 40, later tied the knot with Emma on July 2, 2007 at her family home, the day she turned 18. After her marriage, the beauty queen moved into her husband’s base of operations in Culiacan. There she completed her high school diploma and went to university to study journalism.

Although the couple’s wedding was well attended by local drug lords, Emma Aispuro claims she was unaware that her husband was involved in any shady business when she married him.

A New York Post report revealed that Emma’s family also had ties to the Sinaloa Cartel. Her father, popularly known as “father-in-law” in the cartel, was said to have been one of El Chapo’s right-hand men. In 2013, both her father and brother, Ines Omar Coronel Aispuro, were arrested for coordinating the shipment of drugs through Arizona for the cartel from Mexico. Also in August 2015, Edgar, Emma’s youngest brother, was arrested for helping Guzman escape from a maximum security prison on July 11, 2015.

During an interview with Telemundo in 2018, the beauty queen reiterated that she had never seen her husband do anything illegal and that he blamed the media for his notoriety.
