Born in Oxford, Tom Bateman grew up in a family of 14 children whose parents were professors at the prestigious Oxford University. Passionate about theater from an early age, he trained at the National Youth Theater then obtained a scholarship to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art from where he graduated in 2011. Tom Bateman found his first role in the film Much Ado About Nothing adapted from the famous play of the same name by William Shakespeare . Building on this first successful attempt, he was then chosen to play in several episodes of the series Tunnel and Da Vinci’s Demons . Quickly gaining notoriety, he plays the main character of the series Jekyll & Hyde , that of Robert Jekyll, grandson of the famous doctor Henry Jekyll, investigating his origins and his true identity in London in the 1930s.

In the cinema, his Roles are also gaining momentum as evidenced by his performances in the thrillers B&B and Hi-Lo Joe, both released in 2017 (but unpublished in France). Tom Bateman is then one of the main protagonists of the series Vanity Fair with Olivia Cooke , the adaptation of the novel “The Vanity Fair” by William Makepeace Thackeray which is set in the Napoleonic era. This very pronounced constant in his filmography – taking part in projects whose plots take place in specific historical periods – is also found with Beecham House telling the life of the family of the British trader John Beecham in 19th century India. The actor plays the title role and main character in this series created by Gurinder Chadha ( The Last Viceroy of India ).

In 2018, Tom Bateman found a role that contrasted with his habits in Cold Blood by Hans Petter Moland , who for the occasion made a US remake of his own Norwegian thriller, Chilled . In this chilling thriller tinged with dark humor, the actor plays the film’s villain, a fearsome drug lord responsible for the death of Liam Neeson ‘s son . The Oxford native confides about this character who is as disturbed as he is dangerous: “He’s a psychopath. I read a book called The Psychopath Test before we started filming, and it’s about these people who don’t are not quite wired like us, but nevertheless function in society. It’s very interesting to see someone decide, for example, to shoot someone on impulse – even someone who may seem close – because you never know what’s going on in this guy’s head.

In 2021, Tom Bateman plays an unfaithful husband in the Netflix series Mon Amie Adèle , which leans towards the psychological thriller side.
